Ten Principles for Creating Better Indexes

"Ten Principles for Creating Better Indexes" will address the following topics (with examples), all of which we need to think about as we work: Accuracy (locators and information), Metatopic (structure and navigation), Consistency, Clarity (terminology and glosses), Conciseness, Reflexivity (digressions and language), Readability (alpha sort, parallel construction), Audience and access, Comprehensiveness (specificity and depth), and Common sense (digestion, natural language).
Margie Towery has worked in the publishing field for over twenty years. For more than fifteen years, she has focused on indexing scholarly texts. Margie won the H. W. Wilson Award for Excellence in Indexing in both 2002 and 2008. Examples of those indexes are available on ASI’s web site. She also indexed both the 15th and 16th editions of the Chicago Manual of Style. Her recent essays include “The Quality of a Scholarly Index” (in Indexing Specialties: Scholarly Books), “A Joycean Usability Experiment” (Key Words and The Indexer), and “Creating Elegant Subheadings” (with Victoria Agee, in Index It Right: Vol. 2). Margie has been noted for her enthusiastic presentations and her passion for indexing.

To encourage participation, the South Central Chapter will again subsidize the cost of this
particular chapter meeting. Lunch, snacks, and beverages are included in the registration fee.
